Methodological Aspects of Developing Intercultural Communicative Competence in a Virtual Environment Through Virtual Exchange Programs

Abstract

The ability to establish effective intercultural communication is vital in the context of growing global conflicts. It requires both knowledge of a foreign language and skills to use it effectively in multicultural environment. Nowadays this is the crucial task for higher education. Being a mirror of culture, language is a powerful tool to understand the mindset of other peoples as well as to facilitate professional and personal development. Intensive implementation of technologies into modern education requires the adaptation of current approaches and the search of new ones. Hence, the virtual learning environment, virtual exchange programs in particular, open up unique opportunities to immerse students in multilingual and multicultural environments without physical relocation and create authentic conditions for linguistic and intercultural development. The effectiveness of such programs relies on proper methodological support that addresses the peculiarities of online interaction. The purpose of the article is to analyze the potential of the virtual learning environment in developing intercultural communicative competences, identify approaches, principles and a set of practical tasks for their effective development. Methods. The study methodology included a comparative-analytical method to review academic resources which allowed for clarifying the term “intercultural communicative competence” in the context of the virtual learning environment. In also involved a survey to identify criteria and requirements for the virtual course and collect data on the effectiveness and level of intercultural skills development. Results. It has been established that the development of intercultural communicative competence using digital technologies while learning English language in a virtual environment requires a comprehensive approach to develop both linguistic and intercultural skills. The proposed set of tasks contributes to more effective acquisition of authentic material, development of teamwork skills with representatives of other cultures, cultivation of tolerant attitude and the practical ability to build fruitful intercultural relationships in the digital environment. Conclusions. The research highlights the importance of integrating innovative digital approaches into the system of specialist training to develop strong skills for effective intercultural interaction. The virtual learning environment, particularly virtual exchange programs, is a highly effective tool for fostering intercultural communication competence. The proposed tasks based on the principles of problem-based learning, collaboration and interaction, reflection and creativity significantly enhance students’ motivation for adaptation and cooperation in the contemporary world.
