Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of different hypoxic training strategies on athletes’ VO₂max, with particular attention to the effectiveness of the “live high – train low” approach and intermittent hypoxic breathing. To achieve this goal, an analysis of scientific studies investigating the influence of these strategies on athletes’ physiological parameters was conducted. The research methodsincluded a theoretical review of the literature, synthesis of the available data, and empirical approaches such as observation of athletes’ training practices. The analysis identified both the strengths and limitations of each method. The “live high – train low” strategy demonstrated significant improvements in VO₂max due to prolonged exposure to hypoxic conditions, which promoted adaptive physiological changes, including increased blood oxygen capacity. However, this method also presents disadvantages, such as high equipment costs and the risk of immunosuppression if applied incorrectly. Intermittent hypoxic breathing, in contrast, produced short-term improvements in VO₂max and aerobic endurance but requires specialized equipment for breathing control and may cause psychological discomfort. Its advantages include program flexibility and the possibility of integration into diverse training regimens. The findings confirm that both approaches can be effective for improving VO₂max, although their success depends on individual athlete characteristics and specific training conditions. The conclusions emphasize the need for a comprehensive approach to the selection of hypoxic training strategies, taking into account their advantages and disadvantages in order to achieve optimal results.
