Modern approaches to social work with adolescents in the context of societal changes

Abstract

Abstract: Adolescence occupies a special place in the process of socialization of the individual, since it is during this period that identity, value orientations and social competencies are formed. Modern social transformations caused by military actions, economic instability and digitalization of the educational space significantly affect the formation of the younger generation. As a result, adolescents find themselves in a situation of increased psychological vulnerability, face difficulties in adaptation, a sense of loss of security, risks of social isolation and emotional exhaustion. The article examines modern approaches to social work with adolescents in the context of societal changes and challenges caused by war, forced displacement, and social instability. The aim of the study is to identify key aspects of adapting social programs and practices to support adolescents in Ukraine during crisis situations. The research is based on qualitative data from an online training program for adolescent leaders, which involved 122 participants, 48 of whom provided extended written responses. Methods of narrative analysis, systematization, and comparative approaches were applied. The article identifies five key areas of work: ensuring continuity of support in disrupted social networks; formation of new adolescent communities, including internally displaced persons; development of adaptive creativity in creating social resources; strengthening leadership competencies under pressure; and deepening adolescents’ spiritual and value orientations. The findings demonstrate that social work in such conditions requires a balance of flexibility and structure, sensitivity to traumatic experiences, and active family involvement in the support process. The results are relevant for designing new models of social work with youth in Ukraine and may also be applied by international organizations working in the fields of social policy, education, and child protection.
