Opportunities of artificial intelligence as a field of computer science in teaching foreign languages

Abstract

Abstract: The article explores the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) as an innovative tool in foreign language teaching within the context of digital transformation in education. It analyzes the key functional capabilities of AI, including automation of routine pedagogical tasks, personalized learning, integration of virtual assistants, support for adaptive assessment, and language analytics. The study highlights the role of intelligent educational platforms in enhancing student motivation and in developing both language and digital competencies. Special attention is given to the potential of AI to create an interactive learning environment accessible 24/7, as well as its contribution to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in the education sector. The article emphasizes the systemic shift in the teacher’s role, which, with the implementation of AI, focuses more on creative and communicative aspects of the learning process, while delegating routine tasks to intelligent algorithms. It identifies current AI technologies - such as machine learning, natural language processing, and generative models - and evaluates their effectiveness in addressing linguodidactic objectives. Based on a review of national and international studies, the article substantiates the prospects of using digital tools to build adaptive educational trajectories and foster intercultural communicative competence in students. Drawing from academic sources and practical experience of Ukrainian higher education institutions, the study justifies the integration of AI as a means of modernizing language training. The article advocates for the systematic implementation of AI in foreign language education to improve the quality of higher education and to develop an effective digital learning environment.
