Abstract: The article provides a justification for the theoretical and practical foundations of updating the content of English language training for future seafarers within the framework of a skills-based approach. Objective. The objective is to define the principles, learning conditions, and content priorities for development of maritime English communication skills to specialists in accordance with the requirements of modern maritime education in the context of digitalization, automation, and the use of green energy in shipping. Methods. The analysis and synthesis of scientific sources, the system-structural approach, the content analysis of IMO and STCW Convention documents, and pedagogical modelling were utilised. This facilitated the identification of trends in the development of maritime education and directions for integrating the skills-based approach into the process of English-language training. Results. It has been established that maritime English performs a dual function: as a means of professional and everyday communication, and as a tool for accessing technical and managerial information. The skills-based approach helps people to learn a set of practical skills that combine language, work and social skills. The main areas of content update include: content that matches the skills needed for the job; integrating professional situations into language tasks; developing English skills through tasks that require real-life situations; using digital resources, real-life materials, simulations and projects. Conclusions. Updating the content of English language teaching within the framework of a skills-based approach is a prerequisite for improving the quality of professional training. This approach provides a practical orientation of the educational process, integrating linguistic, professional and social components. It produces a competent specialist who is able to interact effectively in an international environment and work in conditions of autonomous and environmentally safe shipping. Keywords: skills-based approach, maritime English communicative competence, content of training, soft skills, hard skills.Downloads
