Abstract: The article discusses the topical issue of early initiation into sports and early specialization, which is one of the key trends in modern high-performance sports. The aim of the study is to analyze the trend toward early initiation and early specialization in various sports. Research methods used in the study: analysis and generalization of data from scientific and methodological literature and Internet sources, synthesis and analysis methods, analysis of practical experience. The results of the study show that over the past decades, training loads in sports have increased more than 30 times, which, combined with early specialization, leads to a decrease in the duration of sports careers, an increased risk of injury, psycho-emotional exhaustion, and loss of motivation to train on the part of athletes. At the same time, scientific data prove that early initiation into sports is not a negative phenomenon, provided that the long-term training process is planned rationally. It has been established that children who started training at a younger age have better indicators of physical development, intellectual activity, and social adaptation than their peers without early sports experience. The positive experience of involving children in sports at an earlier age is characteristic of many sports today, both in Ukraine and abroad. However, most sports still face the problem of a lack of sound approaches to training young athletes, with training programs for adult athletes often being duplicated, which often leads to premature specialization and, as a result, premature termination of athletic careers. A positive example of overcoming these shortcomings is the use of adapted programs in various sports, such as mini-tennis, mini-basketball, and mini-volleyball, which take into account the age characteristics of children. Such approaches contribute to the gradual formation of motor skills, maintain interest in training, and create favorable conditions for further athletic growth without the risk of premature specialization. Conclusions. It is important to distinguish between the concepts of “early start in sports” and “early specialization.” Early specialization, although it contributes to rapid growth in results, does not guarantee high achievements and often leads to physical and psycho-emotional exhaustion of athletes. On the other hand, early start of sports activities, provided that a differentiated approach is used and the methods are appropriate for the age characteristics of athletes, can be an effective basis for the formation of sports skills in the future. The prospect of further research is related to improving the process of sports selection in team sports, determining the criteria for sports orientation and game specialization in soccer, taking into account the individual characteristics of athletes.
