Abstract

The relevance of the study is determined by the growing role of distance learning formats in the system of higher education and the need for methodological reconsideration of approaches to teaching foreign languages in an online environment. In the context of educational digitalization and changes in interaction models between teachers and students, particular attention should be paid to the issue of maintaining learners’ academic engagement and learning motivation, which directly affects the effectiveness of language acquisition. Insufficient methodological adaptation of traditional teaching approaches to distance learning leads to a decrease in student activity, fragmented participation in the educational process, and difficulties in developing communicative competence. The purpose of the article is to provide a theoretical justification and to identify methodological strategies for enhancing learners’ motivation and engagement in the process of distance foreign language instruction in higher education institutions. The study focuses on systematizing pedagogical techniques and didactic tools capable of ensuring active language practice within an online educational environment. The research methods include analysis and synthesis of scientific and methodological literature on learning motivation and distance language education, comparative analysis of traditional and digital approaches to foreign language teaching, as well as a system-structural approach to modeling a methodological framework for student engagement in learning interaction. Elements of pedagogical modeling were also applied to determine the optimal combination of synchronous and asynchronous learning formats. The research findings indicate that the effectiveness of distance foreign language instruction largely depends on the methodologically grounded use of interactive learning activities, project-based and problem-oriented tasks, gamification elements, and digital educational platforms. The feasibility of task differentiation based on students’ language proficiency levels and individual learning needs is substantiated, as it contributes to increased learning activity and intrinsic motivation. The conclusions emphasize that fostering learner motivation and engagement in distance foreign language education is primarily a methodological challenge, the solution of which requires a high level of professional and methodological competence on the part of the instructor. The proposed methodological strategies can be applied in the practice of foreign language teaching in higher education institutions to improve the quality of language education and optimize the online learning process. Further research should focus on the empirical validation of specific methodological approaches and the development of comprehensive models of distance language instruction.
