Abstract

Objective. The aim of the research is to determine the specific features of physical fitness and health indicators among Chinese university students. Methods. The ascertaining stage involved 267 first- and second-year students from higher education institutions in China. The assessment was carried out according to the National Standards for Students’ Physical Fitness and Health based on seven indicators: body mass index (BMI), vital lung capacity (VLC), 1000 m and 50 m running tests, standing long jump, forward bend flexibility test, and pull-ups. Statistical analysis included the Shapiro–Wilk test, Kruskal–Wallis test, ANOVA, and Spearman’s correlation. Results. No statistically significant differences were found between students of different years of study, which made it possible to consider the sample as a single population. It was established that the average values of BMI and VLC correspond to age norms. A weak direct correlation was identified between BMI and VLC, and a strong relationship was found between shoulder girdle strength and speed-strength abilities. The integrated assessment showed that 67.4% of students demonstrated a high score for BMI; however, according to the physical fitness criterion, a satisfactory level predominates, and no individuals with excellent results were recorded. This indicates the presence of functional potential for improving physical condition through specialized training. Conclusions. Systematic participation in Dragon boat rowing maintains an adequate level of physical condition among young people and contributes to the harmonious development of key physical qualities. The established correlations confirm the functional integrity of strength and speed development within this type of activity. The obtained data justify the feasibility of integrating Dragon boat rowing, as a national traditional practice, into physical education and recreational programs for students.
