Using artificial intelligence as a tool for developing academic writing skills in English language

Abstract. The study aims to determine the effectiveness of the use of artificial intelligence in modern methods of teaching academic writing among students studying English in higher education institutions. In particular, the features of combining Automated Writing Evaluation, ChatGPT and Grammarly with such modern pedagogical methods as process writing, genre-oriented approach, collaborative writing, and gamification were analyzed. A content analysis of thematic scientific research over the past 5 years was carried out. A comparative analysis was also conducted taking into account the features of the use and effectiveness of these methods. It was established that the use of artificial intelligence tools stimulates the improvement of academic writing level and develops critical thinking. These tools demonstrate high effectiveness in the context of collaborative learning and gamification methods. At the same time, excessive use of AI without pedagogical support and recommendations can cause the students’ transition to passive reflection and suppress the development of creative abilities. The analysis made it possible to formulate a number of practical recommendations for increasing the effectiveness of AI usage in teaching academic writing. Among them, the symbiosis of automated feedback with teacher observation and consultations, an individual approach to teaching methods and accompanying technological tools. The prospects of using modern interactive technologies in the process of pedagogical practice of academic writing skills are confirmed. The results obtained can be used by practicing teachers in preparation for classes on academic writing, language theory, teaching methods, etc. Further research should focus on experimental confirmation of the long-term effectiveness of AI in the context of teaching academic writing.Downloads
