Abstract

In the context of the transformation of the higher education system, the issue of establishing and maintaining the principles of academic integrity has become particularly relevant, as the outcomes of medical activity directly affect human health, life, and safety. Academic integrity in the medical field encompasses not only the prevention of violations such as plagiarism, fabrication, or falsification of data, but also the development of a culture of responsible use of scientific information, proper research conduct, and adherence to ethical standards of clinical practice.

Purpose. The purpose of this study is to analyze the current state of compliance with academic integrity standards in higher medical education in Ukraine and to develop recommendations for their implementation in the educational process of medical institutions.

Methods. The study is based on the analysis of current regulatory and legal acts of Ukraine governing academic integrity, a systematic review of scientific works by Ukrainian and foreign scholars, as well as an empirical study through a survey of graduates from Poltava State Medical University, National Pirogov Memorial Medical University, and Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University. The questionnaire contained ten questions aimed at identifying the level of respondents' awareness of the principles of academic integrity, their skills in formatting references, understanding of responsibility for plagiarism, and experience in using anti-plagiarism systems.

Results. The survey identified three levels of graduates’ awareness: a high level of knowledge was demonstrated by 7% of respondents, a medium level by 69%, and a low level by 25%. Respondents with a low level of knowledge lacked basic skills in proper source citation and demonstrated insufficient awareness of responsibility for violations of academic integrity. The majority of respondents had fragmented knowledge and required additional training and methodological support. The analysis of scientific sources confirmed the growing role of digital technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, in shaping academic integrity among medical students and faculty. The formation of a conscious and responsible attitude toward the principles of academic integrity among medical education learners and academic staff is a key factor in improving the quality of the educational process, fostering critical thinking, developing the ability to independently analyze scientific sources, and making well-grounded professional decisions.

Conclusions. Academic integrity is a fundamental element of medical education that shapes professional ethics and the deontological competence of future physicians. The study results indicate the need for systematic measures, including the integration of specialized courses, the introduction of practical case-based learning, professional development of faculty in the use of artificial intelligence in the educational process, and the development of methodological guidelines for compliance with ethical standards in scientific and educational activities. The implementation of academic integrity principles provides a foundation for building public trust, forming professional elites of the state, and ensuring an adequate quality of life for the population through increased effectiveness and safety of medical care.
