Objective. The article focuses on the organization of student group learning interaction in contemporary higher education, with particular emphasis on the principles of cooperative learning and the functional role of the leader within an academic group. The objective of the study is to systematize theoretical approaches to group-based learning interaction and to substantiate leadership as a key mechanism for regulating communicative and cognitive processes in both theoretical courses and practical classes in foreign languages. Methods. The study employs methods of theoretical analysis and synthesis of scholarly sources, comparative analysis of pedagogical approaches to organizing group work, and generalization of instructional experience gained from teaching theoretical disciplines as well as practical classes in English, French, and German in higher education institutions. The methodological framework is grounded in cooperative learning theory, social interdependence theory, and concepts of group dynamics applied to academic learning environments. Results. The findings make it possible to identify core principles underlying effective group learning interaction, including structured collaboration, clearly defined role distribution, individual accountability, regulated communication, and systematic reflection on the learning process. In group work, the leader is responsible for organizing how students work together. In theoretical classes, this usually means guiding the discussion, keeping it on topic, and involving students who participate less actively. In practical foreign language classes, leadership facilitates communicative engagement, equal involvement of participants, and sustained use of the target language during group tasks. Conclusions. The results highlight the effectiveness of combining well-defined organizational principles of group work with flexible, function-oriented leadership as a condition for enhancing learning outcomes. The proposed approach reduces the formalization of group-based instruction and enables its adaptation to the specific objectives of theoretical and practical courses in higher education.Downloads
