Abstract

The current stage of sports development is characterized by the search for effective means of improving the training process that ensure a combination of high performance outcomes with health-promoting and preventive orientation. In this context, fitness is considered a universal tool for optimizing the physical and functional preparedness of athletes, which can be integrated into various structural components of the training process. The purpose of the study was to examine the main fitness means and their application for improving the training process of athletes. Methods. Analysis and synthesis, generalization, systematization, classification, and the logical method were used. The implementation of fitness means in the training process of swimmers involved the use of fitness equipment for dry-land training, including BOSU platforms, body bars, step platforms, tennis balls, fitballs, Blazepod reaction lights, medicine balls, Pilates rubber balls, dumbbells, plyometric boxes, short and long resistance bands, as well as equipment for water-based training, such as hand paddles, kickboards, pull buoys, floating mats, and aquatic sticks. Scientific studies have substantiated the effectiveness of innovative fitness training means in the preparation of highly qualified athletes and analyzed the potential of fitness as a means of enhancing physical fitness and functional stability. The feasibility of incorporating fitness exercises at different stages of training has been justified. Special attention is paid to the implementation of corrective and preventive measures in the training process, modeled on the basis of biomechanical analysis of the athletes’ musculoskeletal system. The positive effects of high-intensity interval fitness training on physical fitness and body composition have been demonstrated. A comparative analysis of fitness means and directions of their application in the training process of athletes indicates that fitness is characterized by high variability and versatility. Its means can be used in the training systems of qualified athletes as well as in the preparation of young athletes, performing developmental, health-promoting, corrective-preventive, and specialized functions. Fitness means are integrated into various structural elements of the training process—from warm-up and recovery sessions to the main and special preparatory parts of training. Such multifunctionality allows fitness to be considered not as an auxiliary component, but as an effective tool for improving the training process of athletes, taking into account the sport discipline, the stage of long-term training, and individual characteristics.
