Communicative Approach and Interactive Technologies as an Effective Tool for Teaching English in Higher Education

Abstract. The article explores the communicative approach in teaching English in institutions of higher education as a key instrument for developing students' foreign language professional competence. Particular attention is given to the adaptation of this approach to meet the professional training needs of students in non-linguistic specialties. In the context of globalization, Ukraine's integration into the global educational space, and the growing demand for highly qualified professionals capable of intercultural communication, English language acquisition has become increasingly important. The aim of the study is to emphasize that effective language learning is possible only through the integration of the communicative approach with interactive technologies, which enable the simulation of real professional situations and promote the development of students’ critical thinking, teamwork skills, and learner autonomy. Among the methods used for the research are analysis, synthesis, generalization, systematization, and comparison. The article analyzes international experience from Europe, the United States, and Asia in implementing innovative digital tools in language education, including the use of AI technologies, VR/AR environments, blended learning platforms, mobile applications, language simulations, and gamification. Effective international practices are analyzed, with an emphasis on the role of digital tools and interactive environments in enhancing professional communication in English. Particular attention is given to the potential of these approaches in the context of preparing a new generation of specialists in Ukraine. Special attention is paid to enhancing student motivation for language learning through project-based, role-playing, and research activities. The results of the study demonstrated that interactive technologies enhance learners’ motivation, autonomy, and the quality of learning outcomes, while fostering the development of critical thinking and scholarly reflection. It has been proven that the communicative approach, focused on the meaningfulness of communicative content, ensures high effectiveness in English language instruction and contributes to the development of professional, digital, and intercultural competences. The authors highlight the necessity of a creative approach on the part of instructors, the adaptation of international best practices, the development of digital educational resources, and the advancement of international cooperation to prepare a new generation of competitive professionals.Downloads
