Abstract

Abstract: Objective. The aim of this study is to examine the role of distance learning in the preparation of medical specialists in crisis situations, specifically during the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine. The article addresses the main problems and challenges faced by medical universities during the transition to online education, as well as identifies the advantages and disadvantages of distance learning in medical disciplines. Methods. To achieve the stated objective, the methods of literature analysis, comparison of international experience, and analysis of research results on the impact of the pandemic and war on the medical education system were used. Studies that highlight the features of medical universities’ adaptation to the distance learning format, as well as feedback from students and instructors on the effectiveness of online education, were analyzed. Results. The analysis showed that distance learning became an important tool for maintaining the continuity of the educational process in crisis situations. Online education allowed medical students to continue learning during movement restrictions and ensured access to necessary resources. However, the biggest challenge remains the integration of practical training, as many medical skills, such as surgical procedures and patient interaction, cannot be fully conveyed in an online format. Another important issue is the socio-psychological aspects, such as decreased motivation and emotional detachment of students in the context of remote learning. Conclusions. Distance learning has proven to be an effective tool for maintaining medical education during global crises such as the pandemic and war. However, to ensure high standards of medical training, it is necessary to improve hybrid learning formats that combine online technologies with real clinical practices. Further research should focus on developing new approaches to integrating practical training into online education, as well as addressing socio-psychological barriers that arise in distance learning.
