Abstract

Abstract. Problem statement. Speech blocking, when student knows material but cannot speak under communicative pressure, remains common phenomenon in foreign language teaching. Traditional approaches focus on long-term confidence building, but teachers need short-term psychological interventions for immediate speech unlocking in acute blocking situations. Aim. To systematize and analyze short-term psychological techniques allowing quick transition from speech blocking state to safe speaking within one teaching session or several lessons. Methods. Systematic review of Ukrainian and international literature 2008-2024 examining communicative barriers, speaking anxiety, willingness to communicate. Results. Five categories of short-term interventions identified: cognitive reframing of negative beliefs about errors, somatic techniques for reducing physiological arousal, environmental modifications for creating safe speaking space, micro-successes through structured tasks, emotional validation through acknowledging anxiety. Cognitive reframing reduces anxiety within 10-15 minutes of targeted intervention. Somatic techniques like controlled breathing reduce physiological arousal within 3-5 minutes. Environmental modifications through pair or small group work immediately reduce social-evaluative anxiety. Micro-successes build momentum within 20-30 minutes of structured practice. Emotional validation reduces secondary anxiety about anxiety. Combining interventions shows synergistic effects, with 70-85% students achieving functional speaking within one session after acute blocking. Conclusions. Short-term psychological interventions effective for quick speech unlocking but require targeted teacher training in recognizing blocking types and applying appropriate techniques.
