Non-standard astronomy problems as a tool for developing critical thinking in students

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to provide a theoretical justification and practical demonstration of a methodology for using non-standard problems in the study of astronomy as an effective tool for fostering cognitive interest, developing critical thinking, and cultivating key competencies among students. A range of general scientific and pedagogical methods was applied in the research. A theoretical analysis of contemporary scientific, pedagogical, and psychological literature allowed for an examination of the problem of fostering cognitive interest in the context of the transition to a competency-based educational paradigm. Empirical methods were based on the generalization of teaching experience to develop a typology of modern astronomy tasks, which includes integrated, visual, and ethnoastronomical tasks, critical thinking tasks, and thought experiments. The article examines the causes of the crisis in learning motivation, which is driven by a loss of interest in traditional lessons, the devaluation of education, and objective challenges such as the pandemic and war. It justifies the need to move away from traditional rote memorization of facts in favor of stimulating active cognitive activity through the introduction of non-standard tasks. Based on the research, five key recommendations for educators regarding the implementation of such tasks are identified. It is demonstrated that the use of non-standard tasks in astronomy lessons is an effective mechanism for overcoming the crisis of learning motivation and fostering deep cognitive interest. The proposed approach allows for transforming the learner from a passive listener into an active participant in cognitive activity. Moving away from the traditional dictation of facts in favor of research-based and integrated tasks promotes the intensive development of critical thinking and helps students develop the ability to independently acquire new knowledge. In this way, the main standard of modern education—"teaching students how to learn"—is fully realized, and cognitive interest becomes a reliable foundational element of an individual's life competence. Further research in this area should focus on the development and systematization of comprehensive collections of such tasks, specifically adapted for the conditions of distance and blended learning.
