Abstract

The purpose of the article is to provide a theoretical and methodological substantiation of the principles and scientific approaches to researching the development of language education at universities in the Baltic States under conditions of digitalization. Particular attention is focused on identifying the methodological foundations that ensure a comprehensive analysis of transformations in language education under the influence of digital technologies, as well as on revealing the potential of the Baltic experience for the modernization of Ukrainian higher education.

The research methods are based on a combination of general scientific and specialized methods corresponding to the logic of pedagogical and comparative research. The study employs the principles of scientificity, objectivity, historicism, interdisciplinarity, comparability, dynamism, and practical orientation. The methodological framework of the research includes axiological, systemic, activity-based, cultural, comparative, evolutionary, and prognostic approaches. Comparative analysis, systematization, generalization, interpretation of scientific sources, and retrospective analysis were applied to investigate the processes of digitalization in language education.

The research findings demonstrate that the development of language education in universities of the Baltic States is taking place under conditions of digital technology integration, transformation of the educational environment, and reconsideration of the roles of teachers and students. It is substantiated that the systemic approach makes it possible to consider language education as an integral pedagogical system open to digital changes and international interaction. The axiological and cultural approaches ensure the analysis of language education as a carrier of cultural values, a means of intercultural dialogue, and a factor in personal development. The activity-based approach focuses the research on analyzing practices of digital technology implementation in the professional activities of language teachers. The comparative approach enabled the identification of common and specific trends in the digitalization of language education in Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia. The evolutionary and prognostic approaches made it possible to determine the dynamics of transformations in language education and outline the prospects for its further development in the digital environment. The conclusions emphasize that the integrated combination of methodological principles and scientific approaches ensures a holistic study of the development of language education in universities of the Baltic States under conditions of digitalization. It has been established that the digital transformation of language education contributes to the renewal of educational content, forms, and teaching methods, the development of digital competence among teachers and students, the strengthening of intercultural communication, and the integration of universities into the international educational space. The application of the positive experience of the Baltic States for the modernization of language education in Ukraine and the development of innovative models of digital didactics in higher education is considered promising.
