Abstract

The article examines current trends and prospects for the development of student sport in Ukraine. Today, the development of mass student sport, support for the activities of student sports clubs and leagues, as well as the creation of conditions for introducing a grant-based education mechanism for talented prospective student-athletes are among the key directions for implementing projects and initiatives of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine in cooperation with the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Ukraine and the President’s Fund of Ukraine for the Support of Education, Science and Sports, within the framework of a study on the condition and use of sports infrastructure in higher education institutions of Ukraine.

Purpose of the study – to analyze the current state and key prerequisites for improving the development of student sport in Ukraine.

Research methods: analysis, systematization, and generalization of data from scientific and methodological literature.

Results. Based on the analysis, systematization, and generalization of literature sources, the key prerequisites for improving the development of student sport in Ukraine at the present stage were identified and their content was specified.

Conclusions. The key prerequisites for improving the development of student sport in Ukraine include promoting the integration of university sport into the international community; improving the regulatory and legal framework for student sport development and its commercialization; modernization and expansion of sports infrastructure in higher education institutions and professional pre-higher education institutions; promoting the development of team sports among students; introducing grants/scholarships for athletes; and fostering a sports culture and a holistic attitude toward physical activity and a healthy lifestyle among student youth.
