Abstract

In the training of future translators, it is important to understand the peculiarities of the mentality and culture of a foreign-speaking socio-cultural group, the linguo-cultural aspects of communicative behaviour, and the application of this knowledge in a specific context, which determines the relevance of the study. The purpose of the article is to study and implement a linguo-cultural approach to the formation of English-speaking intercultural translation competence in students of the speciality of applied linguistics. Methods. The work used structural-systemic, comparative, descriptive methods, and the method of linguistic interpretation of texts. Results. It is emphasised that, in the context of a linguocultural approach to learning, it is important to select text material that contains elements whose semantic meaning is formed through interaction between language and culture. It has been proven that, in the process of developing a translator’s intercultural competence, attention is required when translating cultural realities, phraseological units, and concepts. It is determined that when translating a literary text, it is necessary to draw students’ attention to its stylistics to preserve its national and cultural flavour. For this purpose, the article considers various translation strategies. It is substantiated that a complex of interactive methods and technologies plays an important role in the formation of translation competence. Conclusions. It is found that the linguo-cultural approach to the formation of English-language intercultural translation competence in students of the speciality of applied linguistics is implemented through the translation and analysis of those text elements whose semantic meaning is formed in the process of interaction between language and culture (cultural realities, phraseological units, concepts), the use of appropriate translation strategies, and interactive methods. The study outlines relevant aspects of the methodology of teaching translation studies in the linguocultural discourse.
