Abstract

The article examines the theoretical foundations of the competency-based approach in higher education and its role in the professional training of students. It outlines a system of key competencies required of modern specialists, with particular attention given to multicultural competence as an important component in preparing competitive professionals. The essence of multicultural competence is analyzed as involving awareness of cultural diversity, openness to other cultures, and an unbiased attitude toward them. Its main components are identified as value-oriented, cognitive, communicative, behavioral, and reflective ones. The importance of multicultural competence for future specialists is emphasized in the context of effective intercultural interaction, professional mobility, and successful activity within a globalized educational and social environment. English is considered an important means of developing multicultural competence among future lawyers. The importance of foreign language training for enhancing intercultural communication, tolerance, professional mobility, and readiness for interaction in a multicultural environment is emphasized. The practical part of the study presents the author’s experience in developing multicultural competence among law students in English language classes. Examples of learning activities are provided within the topics “Constructing Cultural Identity,” “Anthropology of Globalization,” “Mobility and Citizenship,” “Media and Intercultural Communication,” and “Multilingualism of Modern Society.” The use of discussions, role plays, project work, case studies, and media text analysis is described.
