Formation of communicative skills and abilities of 1st-year philology students in English classes using the discussion method

The purpose of the article is to study the method of using discussion as a method of interactive learning in practical English language classes of first-year students. The main tasks of the article: consider the features of the discussion as a method of interactive learning in the process of learning a foreign language; distinguish the stages of formation of communicative competence in speaking in the context of using the discussion method in practical English classes; to offer a set of exercises using discussion for the formation of communicative competence in speaking during English language learning; check in practice the effectiveness of the developed set of exercises. The research methods: critical analysis of literary sources on the methodology of foreign language teaching, pedagogy on the topic of research, linguistic didactic analysis of educational material, study of best practices in teaching a foreign language on the research problem, trial training and testing. In the results of the study, the concept of discussion and the stages of its organization are considered. Examples of exercises for the formation of skills and abilities of communicative competence using the discussion method such as: exercises on exercises for mastering replication; exercises for mastering dialogic units and exercises for using dialogic units in micro-dialogue are given. The conclusions indicate that the use of discussion as an interactive form of work in practical English language classes has a positive effect on increasing students' interest in the learning process, as well as diversifying it, which is due to the choice of relevant and life topics for discussion.
