Abstract

Academic mobility among students is a critical component of European integration processes in higher education, significantly impacting the development of national education systems, enhancing their competitiveness, and promoting integration into the global educational environment. Within European higher education reforms and global trends toward globalization, academic mobility has become essential for developing professional competencies, fostering intercultural communication, and building international connections. In Ukraine, where integration into the European educational space is of particular relevance, it is crucial to examine both the domestic and international mobility of students and faculty and their impact on the higher education system.

This study aims to analyze current trends in academic mobility in Ukraine, identify its characteristics within European integration processes, and assess its influence on the competitiveness of higher education institutions, student skills development, and adaptation to the demands of the international labour market.

This study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining theoretical analysis, statistical data, and empirical methods to assess trends and challenges in the development of academic mobility in Ukraine. The primary methods include document analysis, comparative analysis of educational programs, and statistical data processing to reflect changes in the number of students participating in academic mobility programs.

The findings indicate that academic mobility in Ukraine is actively evolving, particularly in domestic mobility, facilitated by simplified student transfer procedures among national higher education institutions. At the same time, the rate of international mobility, although showing positive changes, is growing slowly due to financial and administrative barriers, language difficulties, and a need for adequate information on studying abroad. International mobility programs, such as "Erasmus+" and participation in European research projects, contribute to the internationalization of Ukrainian HEIs but require additional financial and organizational efforts for effective implementation.

Academic mobility is vital in modernizing Ukraine's higher education system; however, to achieve optimal outcomes, various obstacles must be addressed, including the need for active development of virtual forms of academic mobility and dual degree programs, which can substantially expand opportunities for Ukrainian students.
