In the context of the modern challenges faced by Ukraine, the formation of client-centered competencies in future social workers takes on particular importance. This paper, based on an analysis of international documents and approaches (ISO standards, WHO recommendations, European Union documents, documents from international professional associations of social work, etc.), identifies the main characteristics of the client-centered approach in social work, including empathy, active listening, adapting services to individual client needs, and promoting their autonomy. Special attention is given to the competencies that ensure the implementation of a client-centered approach for providing high-quality social services, namely: the ability to demonstrate empathy and active listening; the ability to work with diverse client groups and adapt services to their needs; the ability to engage clients in the process of planning and implementing services; the ability to support client autonomy; the ability to conduct analysis and assess the effectiveness of services; the ability to respond to client requests; adherence to ethical standards and confidentiality. The article discusses the issues of forming these competencies in the education of future social workers in higher education institutions, particularly through the development of practical skills, the implementation of interactive teaching methods, and the provision of support for students during and after their studies. The article also provides recommendations for higher education institutions to improve educational programs, with a focus on ethical standards, professional responsibility, and ensuring high-quality training of social workers who meet the requirements of the modern client-centered approach.
