Using short animated films in teaching Ukrainian as a foreign language

Abstract

The purpose of the article is to theoretically substantiate and methodologically develop a system of tasks based on short animated films in the Ukrainian language classroom for a foreign language audience. The article studies the scientific and methodological literature on the introduction of animated films into the process of teaching Ukrainian as a foreign language. For this purpose, a set of methods was used, including analysis, synthesis, comparison and generalization. The advantages of introducing animated films as teaching aids in the process of teaching Ukrainian to a foreign audience are highlighted. The results of the study have shown that the use of animated films in Ukrainian as a foreign language classes helps to increase students' motivation, improve their communication skills, individualize and differentiate learning; creates a natural environment in the classroom within the situation; encourages students to be active, creative and independent, significantly improves the emotional climate in the classroom. It is established that one of the main problems of introducing animated films in teaching Ukrainian to foreign students is the selection of video material. The main selection criteria are determined, including: the content and aesthetic value of the cartoon; its functionality for mastering lexical and/or grammatical material; correspondence to the level of language training of students; relevance and novelty of the topic; short duration; proper quality of the video material. For the practical part of the study, a short Brazilian cartoon by the directorial duo Helena Hilario and Mario Peche, Umbrella, was chosen. At the planning stage, the final result of the work on the cartoon was predicted. The system of exercises, which conditionally covers three stages: preview, viewing and postview, is compiled. The methodology of working with the animated film “Umbrella” at each stage is described. The article concludes that animated films have a significant linguodidactic potential in teaching Ukrainian as a foreign language, but their use in Ukrainian as a foreign language classes requires considerable methodological preparation from the teacher, in particular, the development of an effective system of tasks.
