Abstract

The modern world is characterized by the pervasive presence of advanced technologies and human achievements, which are aimed at significant simplifying and enhancing human life, as well as the various domains of human activity. However, the rapid and excessive pace of technological advancement also presents certain risks that challenge both individuals and society at large. Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly infiltrating higher education, providing new opportunities for both teaching and learning. The integration of AI technologies into the educational process is driving profound changes in the structure of education, as well as in the roles and responsibilities of both teachers and students.

This article is focused on the advantages and challenges associated with the use of artificial intelligence technologies in higher education. It examines the key aspects of AI, particularly its application within the higher education system, and the implications of this integration. The research highlights that AI has a profound impact on the development and enhancement of the higher education landscape. Universities and colleges have increasingly and actively embraced AI advancements in their activities, as well as in the dynamics of the teacher-student relationship.

The primary advantages of incorporating artificial intelligence into the higher education system include the automation assessment, personalized learning experience, the enhancement of distance education, improvements in administrative processes, and the emergence of blended learning - a model that is particularly relevant in the current stage of global development.

The article also examines the key stages in the development and integration of artificial intelligence technologies within higher education. It presents the perspectives of leading scholars on the challenges associated with the use of AI in education and its broader implications. Additionally, the article examines the efforts by governments and international organizations to establish a regulatory framework to govern the relationships arising  from the application of AI technologies in higher education. It also addresses a range of concerns raised by the European University Association regarding the protection of human rights and freedoms in the context of AI use.

In this way, the article contributes to a comprehensive understanding of the significance of incorporating AI technologies into higher education, highlighting both their potential advantages and associated risks.
