Abstract

Modern legal education in Ukraine is undergoing a transformation due to the need to adapt to new social challenges, European integration processes, and labor market demands. In this context, there is a growing need to improve approaches to training future lawyers, particularly through the integration of theoretical knowledge with practical skills. One of the most effective tools of active learning is the case method, which enables the modeling of real legal situations and the development of professional competencies. Objectives. The aim of the study is to theoretically substantiate the essence, significance, and features of applying the case method in the professional training of law students. Methods. Methods of the study include the analysis of scientific sources, generalization of experience in implementing case-based learning in higher education, and structuring a model of the educational process using case studies. Results. It has been proven that the case method effectively contributes to the formation of key professional competencies: the ability to analyze legal situations, formulate arguments, operate legal categories, and work with legal acts and documents. It was found that the use of case studies makes it possible to simulate both typical and complex situations from real legal practice, particularly based on court decisions, thereby bringing the learning process closer to the conditions of future professional activity. The main challenges of implementing the method in Ukrainian higher education institutions were identified, such as teacher conservatism, lack of methodological support, and weak integration into curricula. A model for applying case studies has been proposed, including a clear case structure, a sequence of student actions, and the teacher’s role as a facilitator. Conclusions. The case method promotes the integration of theory and practice in legal education, the development of essential professional skills, and brings training closer to the realities of legal work. It is an effective active learning tool that fosters critical thinking and high-quality professional training. Further research should focus on broader implementation in educational programs and the improvement of methodological support.
