Abstract. The purpose of the article is to analyze the history of the formation and development of art schools in Ukraine. Research methods. The study applies historical-pedagogical, historical-chronological, and comparative-historical methods, as well as analysis, synthesis, and generalization of scientific sources. Research results. The article reviews the history of the formation of art centres in Kyiv, Odesa, and Kharkiv. The influence of socio-political, cultural, and ideological factors on the organisation of the educational process, the structure of institutions, and the content of artistic training is described. Results of the study can be used in the educational process of art education institutions in teaching courses on the history of Ukrainian art, cultural studies, and art pedagogy. The research materials can be used in the development of curricula, lecture courses, methodological recommendations, and textbooks for students of artistic specialities. The generalised historical data can serve as a theoretical basis for further research in the field of art education, as well as be useful for the practical work of teachers, artists, and organisers of cultural and artistic projects to preserve and promote national artistic traditions. Conclusions. Ukraine’s attainment of sovereignty initiated a fundamental restructuring of higher education based on the revival of national traditions. The modern stage of development of higher art education institutions is characterized by their integration into the pan-European and global cultural and educational space. The main vectors of the contemporary art-pedagogical strategy are: professional competence (raising the level of artistic and creative mastery in accordance with world standards) and national-cultural identity (defining educational priorities as an integral yet distinctive component of the global artistic process). Art education has evolved from a narrowly specialized type of institution into a multidisciplinary academic center that ensures the development of national artistic traditions in the context of European integration. It is defined that art education has evolved from highly specialised educational institutions to multidisciplinary academic centres, which ensures the development of national artistic traditions in the context of European. Further research can be addressed to an interdisciplinary analysis that combines the fields of pedagogy, art history, and cultural studies.Downloads
