The article provides a comprehensive analysis of contemporary approaches to the use of artificial intelligence technologies in teaching English to students of higher education institutions. It examines the theoretical and methodological foundations of integrating intelligent technologies into the educational process and defines their role in enhancing the effectiveness of foreign language communicative competence development. It has been established that artificial intelligence serves as a powerful tool for learning personalization, assessment automation, and continuous feedback provision, significantly improving the quality of students’ language training. The study characterizes the main artificial intelligence tools used in English language teaching, including chatbots, speech recognition systems, generative language models, automated writing evaluation systems, adaptive learning platforms, and virtual assistants. It has been found that their use contributes to the development of all types of language skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing) by creating an authentic language environment and enabling individualized learning trajectories. Special attention is paid to the analysis of the impact of artificial intelligence technologies on the development of students’ language skills. It is shown that the use of intelligent systems helps overcome language barriers, increases learning motivation, and enhances independent learning activities. At the same time, it is noted that excessive reliance on automated systems may negatively affect the development of critical thinking and learner autonomy. The necessity of a pedagogically grounded approach to the use of AI is emphasized, which implies the combination of traditional and digital teaching methods. It is concluded that artificial intelligence technologies have significant potential for modernizing English language teaching in higher education institutions; however, their effective implementation requires methodological support, the development of teachers’ digital competence, and adherence to ethical principles. Future research prospects are associated with the development of integrated AI-based learning models and the assessment of their long-term impact on students’ language development.
