Abstract

Thе article presents  linguistic and methodological support for the process of mastering English medical terminology by students pursuing the third (educational and scientific) level of higher education, ‘Doctor of Philosophy’, aimed at deepening the knowledge necessary for scientific activity, reading international literature and communication. The research focuses on specialised linguistic and methodological support in acquiring skills related to ensuring the linguistic standardisation of medical terms.

The aim of this study is to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the content and organisational features of the ‘rehabilitation’ concept sphere by identifying and analysing the linguistic means used to organise the concept of ‘surgery’, which verbalise it as a component of the ‘rehabilitation’ concept sphere.

The following general scientific and linguistic methods are used at various stages of the study: the method of exhaustive sampling; definitional and component analysis; contextual analysis; and structural-semantic analysis.

Results. Within the framework of the study, based on the linguistic means of representing the concept and its cognitive properties, the structure of the analysed concept sphere ‘rehabilitation’ was modelled, in particular its component – the concept ‘surgery’.  The practical significance of the results lies in the potential use of the data obtained: in the training of future healthcare professionals; in research activities; in the compilation of English-Ukrainian terminology dictionaries; for participation in international medical conferences; in international cooperation and the professional mobility of specialists; and for the translation of rehabilitation documentation.

Conclusions. Medical terminology, as part of general terminology, is characterised by a high degree of standardisation, which ensures accuracy and unambiguity in the description of medical phenomena. In the terminology of a medical text, the concepts, notions and terms are closely interrelated but have different meanings.

The conceptual description of rehabilitation as a health strategy and the concept of ‘surgery’ as its component can serve as a reference for any professional discipline related to rehabilitation within or outside the healthcare sector, as well as for service providers.
