Abstract

Ukraine is facing an urgent need to train social workers who are capable of both recognizing the consequences of trauma and providing effective support to traumatized populations, particularly in wartime conditions. Based on the analysis of international sources, this paper provides an in-depth review of contemporary approaches to implementing trauma-oriented practices in social work and outlines the opportunities for enhancing the training of social workers to assist people affected by traumatic events. The results of this study aim to improve the quality of social work training and provide professional and tailored social support.

The paper presents the characteristics of trauma-sensitive and trauma-informed approaches that are actively used in modern social work. Based on the international practices analysis, social workers' role in trauma intervention and the key competencies required to provide effective trauma-oriented social support are defined. These competencies include the ability to work with cognitive-behavioral therapy, trauma recovery models, trauma-risk management, EMDR therapy, mindfulness therapy, and the application of a strengths-based approach for clients.

It has been established that the education of social workers in trauma-related issues can be strengthened by incorporating these educational components and developing specialized training programs in clinical social work, crisis social work, and social-psychological rehabilitation. Special attention is given to the necessity of preparing professionals capable of working in the context of prolonged military conflict and social upheaval, which will ensure long-term and effective support for those affected by traumatic events.
